Tribal Festivals

Here is a list of festivals celebrated in different states by different groups of Indian tribes.

KARNATAKA TRIBAL FESTIVAL – MADE SNANA

This festival is celebrated by tribal people in Karnataka. It is conducted in the Subramanya temple for 3 days every year. They roll over the leftover food by brahmins as they believe that it cures skin diseases, infertility and marriage issues. Tamil Nadu tribes also celebrate this festival.

TELANGANA TRIBAL FESTIVAL – SAMMAKKA SARALAMMA JATARA

Sammakka jatara comes after Kumbh Mela in terms of crowd. It is celebrated in Warangal district Madaram town. In this festival two goddesses,sammakka and saralamma fought for the welfare of the people. Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra tribes come to held prayers with sincerity. Andhra Pradesh tribes did not celebrate this festival.

ODISHA TRIBAL FESTIVAL- KARAMA

In this festival, God Karamand goddess Karamasani is celebrated as almighty. These two are represented by the branch of the Karam tree. It is celebrated by unmarried girls of the village. The priest gives germinated grams to plant them and pray to God for wealth and welfare.

ANDAMAN ISLAND-MARRIAMMAN THIRUVIZHA

This festival is performed for the Guardian of these islands Goddess Arulmign Mariamman. Her temple is in Astinabad village, 16 km from Port Blair bus terminus. People believed that without the prayers to Goddess Mariamman the construction of Dhannikari Dam would not be completed. People also advised tourists to pay their respect before leaving the island.

DURGAPUR RAJASTHAN- BANESHWAR FESTIVAL

Bhil tribes living in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat celebrate this festival in January and February at Mahi and Som rivers. They worship lord Shiva and Vishnu at the festival. This festival showcase a mishmash of colors in Rajasthan.

CHHATISGARH-BHORAMDEO MAHOTSAV

This festival is celebrated in the bhoramdeo temples which is about 135 km from Raipur. This festival is held to give the honor to the king Ramachandra of Mag dynasty who got married to Princess Ambika Devi of haiya dynasty. This temple is beautifully constructed.

JHARKHAND TRIBAL FESTIVAL – SARHUL

In this festival “Sita” wife of Lord Ram is worshipped as “Dhartimata”. People believed that the goddess will save their village from all disasters and natural calamities.

DAMAN AND DIU TRIBAL FESTIVAL – FOLK DANCE FESTIVAL

Folk dance is an important part of Daman and Diu tribes. To celebrate this festival colorful clothes are brought from Gujarat. At this festival all the people of all age groups take part. Vertigo dance, Mando dance, and Vira dance are performed during the festival.

KARNATAKA- KAILPOLDU KODAVA TRIBE

In this festival, the weapons are worshipped. People clean and decorate their weapons. It is celebrated between 2-4 September. Hunting and cooking of animals we’re also a part of celebration earlier, but it is not done presently.
